Background of the Study
Nursing students are expected to balance a demanding academic curriculum, clinical rotations, and other responsibilities. Their workload can have a significant impact on their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being (Nwadike et al., 2024). At the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, nursing students are required to complete a rigorous combination of theoretical coursework and clinical practice. The challenge of managing a heavy workload may affect students' academic performance, including their grades, clinical competencies, and stress levels. Understanding the relationship between workload and academic outcomes is crucial for improving nursing education and supporting students in achieving optimal performance. This study aims to investigate how the workload of nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital impacts their academic success.
Statement of the Problem
Nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital face significant academic and clinical demands. However, there is limited research on the effect of workload on their academic performance. While a heavy workload might be necessary for comprehensive training, it may also lead to burnout, fatigue, and decreased academic performance. This study seeks to explore how the workload of nursing students influences their academic performance and well-being.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of workload on the academic performance of nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the factors contributing to nursing students’ perceived workload in the institution.
3. To explore the relationship between workload and stress levels in nursing students.
Research Questions
1. How does the workload of nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital affect their academic performance?
2. What factors contribute to the perceived workload among nursing students?
3. How does the workload impact nursing students’ stress levels and overall well-being?
Research Hypotheses
1. Workload does not significantly affect the academic performance of nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
2. There is no significant relationship between the perceived workload of nursing students and their stress levels.
3. The workload does not significantly contribute to nursing students’ academic burnout.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the difficulty in quantifying students' subjective experiences of workload and potential variations in workload across different cohorts and nursing programs.
Definitions of Terms
